While most NCAA football stadiums are tucked away, kept to only for the use of the school, there are a few exceptions. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is case in point, having the extraordinary opportunity to host two Summer Olympics (1932 and 1984), MLB, NFL, two NCAA football teams and several concerts over the years. In its role as fortress for the dominant USC Trojans, finding Los Angeles Coliseum parking spaces has become even more difficult as the team racks up win after win in Los Angeles.
The Coliseum first opened to the public in May 1923, and has been continually renovated since. The Coliseum has also been home at various points for NFL teams, including the Los Angeles (now St. Louis) Rams and the Raiders. It has also served as home for the Dodgers MLB team, as well as the UCLA Bruins, a rival of the Trojans.
The University of Southern California Trojans are the primary tenant of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, racking up accolades faster than the stadium can age. The Trojans are one of the most winningest teams in NCAA Football, ranked 13th, with a record of 786-319-54. The team came into being in 1888, with its first win 1889 against what is now Loyola Marymount, a 40-0 shutout. Following some years in mediocrity, the team won the Rose Bowl in 1943 and 1945 under the tutelage of Coach Jeff Cravath.
In the 1960s and mid-70s, Coach John McKay developed two Heisman winners (O.J. Simpson and Mike Garrett) and conquered four national titles, in 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1974. By the 1980s, the Trojans were receiving a lot of good press, frequently winning the Rose Bowl and flirting with national championships. Overall, the Trojans won 11 national titles, but the latest win in 2004 was vacated. This black mark, along with other sanctions, was a punishment by the NCAA following revelations of Reggie Bush’s receipt of gifts by sports agents.
