NHL Expansion teams have a reputation of not being the most competitive, but the San Jose Sharks are apex predators in development. Despite being founded in 1991, the Sharks haven’t been bottom feeders, instead always maintaining winning ways With the Sharks selling tickets and merchandise faster than one can swim, finding San Jose Sharks parking spaces can be difficult unless you book HP Pavilion parking spaces in advance.
The Sharks are based in the SAP Center at San Jose, formerly known as the HP Pavilion. After opening to the public in September 1993, the venue was known as the San Jose Arena before selling the naming rights to Compaq (later HP) in 2001 to become the HP Pavilion, and then SAP in 2013, resulting in the current name of the SAP Center at San Jose.
The San Diego Sharks came to the Bay Area in 1991, based first in the Cow Palace in Daly City near San Francisco. Once the team moved into the SAP Center in 1993, they qualified for the playoffs twice, in ‘94 and ‘95. And after a two-season drought and subsequent team rebuilding, the Sharks returned from ‘98 to ‘02. While other teams struggle to get a record like this after decades, it didn’t take long for the Sharks to build a reputation as a good, up-and-coming hockey club. Things began to pick up even more in ‘02, when the team won the Pacific Division Championship, a title they duplicated in ‘04 and ‘08-’11.
Since the ‘04 season, the team has not missed the playoffs. Even for their young age, the team has fared well against established opponents, including the Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks. In the ‘10 season, the Sharks won the President’s Trophy for the league’s best regular-season record with 117 points.
