There are a good number of NCAA football teams in the State of Florida, but the adventurous sports fan should give a hoot about the Florida Atlantic Owls. Based in FAU Stadium, the Owls are a relatively new team, having been formed in 2001. The Owls already have a fantastic following, so it may be hard to find a Florida Atlantic football parking space unless you book it in advance. It’s not just the Owls that are new to college football, but their stadium too. More
Opening for games in 2011, FAU Stadium is unlike most arenas in that instead of using Astroturf or other artificial surfaces, natural Bermuda grass covers the field.
For a team that began playing in 2001, the FAU Owls have done relatively well. While it was participating in the Sun Belt Conference, the Owls defeated Troy University in the last game of 2007, becoming Conference champ. As of November 2013, their record is 58-74 (win/loss). Even if it isn’t above 50% as of yet, the team will take the time they need time to develop into a powerful force. Luckily, from 2001-11, the team was coached by Howard Schnellenberger, a man who had been Head Coach of the Baltimore Colts from 1973-74, the University of Miami from 1979-83, Louisville from 1985-94 and Oklahoma in 1995.
With an experienced coach on their side, the team took its first baby steps and gradually matured, going from I-AA Independent to joining the Sun Belt Conference and then finally joining Conference USA in July of 2013. In addition to the Division Championship, Coach Schnellenberger took the Owls to the 2007 New Orleans Bowl and the 2008 Motor City Bowl, of which Florida Atlantic won both games.
