Super Bowl in New York? It could happen.
No, we don’t mean a Super Bowl pitting the NY Giants vs. NY Jets (though wouldn’t that be something)…we’re talking about New York hosting a Super Bowl. Crazy, you say? Well, it could happen. In fact, there’s a very good chance it could happen in 2014.
The New Meadowlands Stadium, which recently opened its doors across the street from the old Giants Stadium, is hoping to land the 2014 Super Bowl. The NFL has a tendency to reward cities that build new stadiums (i.e. see Cowboys Stadium) and there is no bigger reward than hosting the Super Bowl.
However, while each Super Bowl venue faces challenges, New York presents issues that are unique – specifically it’s freezing and snowing come January/February! Sure, other Super Bowls have been played in cold-weather cities like Minneapolis, Indianapolis, but all of those venues had domes to shield the elements. The New Meadowlands Stadium does not have a dome. Some challenges if it does snow, include:
1) Dealing with New York/New Jersey traffic (this is an issue regardless of weather).
2) Clearing off Meadowlands Stadium parking lots, roadways, etc of snow.
3) Determing where to put that snow.
4) Cleaning seats and creating a comfortable experience.
So who is the competition – sunny, balmy Tampa, home to 4 Super Bowls (most recently XLIII in 2009). Nonetheless, hosting one of the largest, most popular events in New York is a tremendous opportunity for the NFL and one that can’t be ignored. Plus, how cool would it be to see the Ice Bowl II?
