Brookline Looking to Shut Out Red Sox Fans
With opening day just a few days away, the blood is already beginning to boil for Red Sox fans. Not because the hated Yankees will be in town (well that too), but because the city of Brookline, home to Boston University and neighbor to Fenway Park, is looking to change the rate structure on parking meters from free to at least $10 on game days.
In years past, after 6 PM, there was no charge to park at a Brookline meter, allowing Red Sox fans to meter park and hop on the Green Line to Fenway Park. However, businesses were up in arms as their customers could not find a place to park on game day. The proposal aims to increase business activity for Brookline merchants by deterring Red Sox fans from parking at the meters.
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the proposed rate structure succeeds in its goal or if it just ends up scaring away both Red Sox fans AND customers.
